BENGAL CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016: Munmun, Ajoy move audience

Local dancer Munmun Ahmed and Indian singer pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty moved the audience with their performances on the fourth night of the Bengal Classical Music Festival 2016.
Munmun Ahmed and her troupe staged several Kathak recitals, starting by paying tribute to the god through a devotional recital called ‘Bhinno Shoroj.’
Subsequently, the troupe displayed various other stances of the classical dance genre in parallel with the presentations of various ragas by a group of instrumentalists.
In a solo performance, Munmun presented a dance piece with a thumri titled ‘Mori Gagariya Kaheko Fori Re Shyam.’
Meanwhile, there were two separate tabla presentations by Indian artistes: Nilesh Ranadive played solo, while pandit Yogesh Samsi and pandit Subhankar Banerjee presented a duet recital.
Jayateerth Mevundi entertained the crowd with melodious khayal based on three ragas, including Suddha Kalyan, Adana and Natyageet.
Carnatic vocalist-duo Ranjani and Gayatri rendered six recitals including nattai-saraswati, raga panto barali, raga mukhari, raga khamaj and vithoba chala.
Next, pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar enchanted the audience with his ethereal sarod rendition. He started with raga gunji kanada, and went on to perform Alap-jor-jhala and gatt and finally playing jogiya kalingra.
The night’s performance ended with an amazing khayal rendition by pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty. He performed raga Bilaskhani Todi, a blend of the ragas Asavari and Todi. He also performed raga Kuntala Varali, and finally a Bhajan in raga Bhairabi.
The five-day Bengal Classical Music Festival ended this morning at the capital’s Army Stadium with a flute recital by pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
