Bengal Foundation

Bengal Foundation is a private trust that began its journey in the late eighties. The founder Abul Khair’s personal regard for the arts coupled with his vision of projecting a culturally rich Bangladesh that will rise above the typical portraiture of a country steeped in flood and famine, led him to this initiative. In the course of its work the Foundation has been abetted by an enlightened body of creative thinkers. After twenty four years on the trail, the organisation’s work now encompasses many forms of visual and performing arts, as well as literature and crafts. The Foundation believes that one’s culture is one’s own responsibility and that the first important initiatives must come from one’s own resources. Informing the rest of the world about Bangladesh’s heritage and contemporary talent requires commitment, dedication, and funding. With that in mind Bengal Foundation has set up two cultural venues, Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts and Bengal Art Lounge, in Dhaka. It has also established one of the largest and best equipped printmaking studios called the Safiuddin Bengal Printmaking Studio. To pay homage to the illustrious painter SM Sultan, Bengal Foundation has facilitated setting up the SM Sultan Bengal Art College in his hometown in south-west Bangladesh. Much of the Foundation’s work involves publishing musical recordings, organising local and international events such as exhibitions, festivals, concerts, talent-searches, art camps and workshops. The organisation continues to develop a knowledge-base in the arts by producing films and publishing catalogues, books and journals. Bengal Foundation has remained a staunch supporter of the theatre movement in Bangladesh. In 2011 Bengal Foundation and renowned Italian publisher joined hands to produce the ‘Great Masters’ and ‘Contemporary Masters’ series on Bangladesh Art. The same year Bengal Foundation facilitated Bangladesh’s maiden participation in the prestigious Venice Biennale. The country’s presence in the Biennale and other subsequent international events, along with the publication of the world-class Bengal-Skira books is gradually making a difference in the way Bangladesh art is perceived in the West.

In order to promote local crafts, Bengal Foundation focused on the revival of natural dyes through its crafts outlet Aranya and introduced the Mastercraftspersons Award in collaboration with the National Crafts Council in 2010. Bengal Foundation pursues a policy of making its events free for all. The Bengal Foundation Collection has 5000 artworks by old masters and contemporary painters. In order to create a venue for this collection, work has begun on the country’s first private contemporary arts and crafts museum, situated in the outskirts of Dhaka.

বুলবুল চৌধুরী ১৯১৯-১৯৫৪

বহুমুখী প্রতিভার অধিকারী নৃত্যশিল্পী বুলবুল চৌধুরী সংস্কৃতি অঙ্গনে ছিলেন অগ্রপথিক ব্যক্তিত্ব। নৃত্য-সৃজনে তিনি গতানুগতিকতামুক্ত এমন এক সৃজনশীল ধারা সৃষ্টি করেছিলেন, যা এ অঞ্চলের বাঙালিকে অনাবিল আনন্দে উদ্বেলিত করেছিল। চলিস্নশের দশকে তিনি ছিলেন গণনাট্য সংঘের সঙ্গে সংশিস্নষ্ট। পরবর্তীকালে তাঁর নৃত্য-সৃজনে মানুষের মর্মযাতনা প্রাধান্য পেয়েছিল। ভারতীয় ঐতিহ্যিক নৃত্যশৈলী ও লোক নৃত্যশৈলীর সংমিশ্রণে তাঁর সৃজন ও নৃত্যধারা হয়ে ওঠে স্বকীয় বৈশিষ্ট্যে উজ্জ্বল এক নৃত্যধারা। পঞ্চাশের দশকে তিনি তাঁর বৃহৎ দল নিয়ে ইউরোপ ভ্রমণ করেন। তাঁর সৃজন ও নৃত্যধারায় মানুষের কল্পনা, দুঃখকষ্ট, ক্ষুধা ও আশা-আকাঙÿা মূর্ত হওয়ায় বুলবুল চৌধুরী হয়ে ওঠেন এক মহান ও সম্মানিত নৃত্যশিল্পী। সেজন্য ধীমান ভাবুক আবুল ফজল তাঁকে অভিহিত করেছিলেন এই অঞ্চলের রেনেসাঁস মানব বলে।

‘বেঙ্গল উচ্চাঙ্গসংগীত উৎসব ২০১৩’-এর তৃতীয় দিন আধুনিক নৃত্যকলার পথিকৃৎ এই শিল্পীকে উৎসর্গ করা হলো।
