ITC Sangeet Research Academy

ITC Sangeet Research Academy (ITC-SRA) was established as an independent Public Charitable Trust in 1977 with the objective of preserving and promoting Hindustani Classical Music. Run and managed by ITC Ltd, it is a peerless example of sustained corporate patronage of a priceless heritage. Its first Board of Trustees included Ravi Shankar, Satyajit Ray and Yehudi Mehuhin. ITC-SRA has played a major role in reviving and nurturing a rich musical tradition. The three basic objectives of ITC-SRA are the creation of an effective training system, to rationalise traditional data with the help of modern research methods and technology and the preservation and propagation of classical music. ITC-SRA has provided the security and comfort of a home to both guru and scholar. Its training system is essentially on the principles of Guru-Shishya Parampara with suitable contemporary inputs. ITC-SRA has also undertaken the task of creating a variety of platforms all over India, which attempts to take quality music systematically to areas and sections of the population who otherwise do not enjoy access to it. The organisation also caters to specialised audience needs to help create connoisseurs of music by changing the conventional conference mould and ushering in new thematic profiles. ITC-SRA is committed to commemorate those veterans and doyens of classical music whose pursuit of music as a form of knowledge has enabled us to establish and perpetuate a community of shared values.

Among the luminaries in the world of Hindustani classical music who readily identified themselves with the ITC-SRA cause at the time of its inception were, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (Rampur Sahaswan gharana), Vidushi Hirabai Barodekar (Kirana gharana), Pandit Nivrittibua Sarnaik (Atrauli-Jaipur gharana), Vidushi Girija Devi (Benaras gharana) and Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan (Agra gharana). All of them happily settled down in Kolkata and helped to create an institution epitomising the Guru-Shishya Parampara. Pandit A. Kanan and Vidushi Malabika Kanan joined in 1979. In 2002, Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, who had been for many years a member of the Academy’s Experts Committee, joined as the head of the Instrumental Music division.

SRA’s current Faculty consist of Gurus Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Pandit Arun Bhaduri, Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain Khan, Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, Vidushi Girija Devi, Pandit Partha Chatterjee, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Uday Bhawalkar and Vidushi Subhra Guha.

It gives me the greatest satisfaction to be a part of this historic event organised jointly by Bengal Foundation and ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Dhaka. Since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Kolkata-based ITC SRA and Dhaka’s Bengal Foundation in February, 2012, many of our musicians have gone to Dhaka and several other cities in Bangladesh and presented their music before enthusiastic audiences wherever they have performed.

The response to these concerts has been heartening enough to urge us to put together this grand festival of music that brings together all the contemporary greats of Classsical Music and Dance on a single platform in Dhaka. Our purpose in collaborating to organise this magnificent event is to celebrate the shared heritage of the classical music of the two countries.

India and Bangaldesh are not mere neighbours. The two countries were connected by an umbilical cord and have a common history. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that many of the greatest classical musicians have had their roots in Bangladesh. It is only due to a strange quirk of fate that they later settled down in India and propagated their music in India. In putting this festival together, it is our purpose to pay tribute to all these legendary artistes who hailed from Bangladesh and reiterate the fact that music knows no borders, real or imaginary. It flows freely and fills up the hearts of all those who have the sensitivity to respond to its universal appeal.

In our endeavour to underscore the shared cultural history of the two countries and also to take it forward from there, Bengal Foundation and ITC SRA are working towards setting up an institute for the training of students in Indian Classical Music with the technical wherewithal provided by ITC SRA. With an instrumental and a vocal section, the academy will aim at providing an all-round, comprehensive schooling in classical music to deserving Scholars who will be identified through countrywide auditions in Bangladesh.

It is our pleasure to be a part of the movement to propagate and popularise classical music in Bangladesh. This sort of cultural interaction is sure to be of great benefit to both the countries. It would certainly go a long way in spreading classical music all over the world.

চিন্ময় লাহিড়ী ১৯১৬-১৯৮৪

চিন্ময় লাহিড়ী ১৯১৬ সালে বাংলাদেশের পাবনা জেলায় জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। ঢাকা বেতারকেন্দ্র প্রতিষ্ঠিত হওয়ার পর গায়ক-বাদক মহলে ব্যাপক সাড়া পড়ে যায়। ঢাকা ও ভারতের নানা স্থান থেকে অনেক বিখ্যাত সংগীতশিল্পী এখানে এসে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন এবং নিয়মিত সংগীত পরিবেশন করতেন। তাঁদের মধ্যে চিন্ময় লাহিড়ীর নাম সর্বাপেক্ষা উলেস্নখযোগ্য। তাঁর বিশিষ্ট গায়নশৈলী তরম্নণ সমাজে সাড়া জাগিয়েছিল। এখানে তাঁর কাছে দীক্ষা নিয়ে গণেন চক্রবর্তী, কালীপদ দাস, গৌড় বসাক প্রমুখ ছাত্র ঢাকায় উচ্চাঙ্গসংগীতের ক্ষেত্রে নিজেদের প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে পেরেছিলেন। এঁদের প্রায় সকলেই দেশবিভাগের পর ভারতে চলে যান।

বারীন মজুমদার ১৯১৯-২০০১
পাবনার রাধানগরে এক সম্ভ্রামত্ম জমিদার পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। সংস্কৃতিবান পরিবারে তাঁর বাবার উৎসাহে কলকাতার ভীষ্মদেব চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের কাছে সংগীতে তালিম নেন। পরবর্তীকালে তিনি লক্ষ্ণৌর ম্যারিস মিউজিক স্কুল থেকে সংগীতশিক্ষা লাভ করেন। ওসত্মাদ ফৈয়াজ খাঁর কাছেও তালিম নেন। ১৯৪৭ সালে পাবনা ফিরে আসেন। ১৯৫৭ সালে ঢাকায় অনুষ্ঠিত সংগীত সম্মিলনে খেয়াল পরিবেশন করে বিপুল সমাদর লাভ করেন। সে বছরই ঢাকায় বুলবুল ললিতকলা একাডেমিতে রাগসংগীত শিÿক হিসেবে যোগ দেন। শিÿক হিসেবে অসাধারণ খ্যাতি অর্জনের পাশাপাশি পাঠ্যতালিকায় সংগীত অমত্মর্ভুক্তকরণে উদ্যোগী হয়ে ওঠেন। বারীন মজুমদার রাগসংগীতগুণী, সংগীত প্রশিÿক ও বিগত ষাটের দশকে বাংলাদেশের একমাত্র সংগীত কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা। ১৯৬৩ সালের নভেম্বর মাসে কাকরাইলে সে সময় দেশের একমাত্র সংগীত মহাবিদ্যালয় স্থাপন করেন। বাংলাদেশে উচ্চাঙ্গসংগীতের প্রচার ও প্রসারে বারীন মজুমদারের অবদান অবিস্মরণীয়। তাঁর অবদানের জন্য পাকিসত্মান আমলে তমগা-ই-ইমতিয়াজ ও স্বাধীনতার পরে একুশে পদক, কাজী মাহ্বুবুলস্নাহ স্বর্ণপদক, রবীন্দ্রপদক, শিল্পকলা একাডেমি পুরস্কারসহ মরণোত্তর স্বাধীনতা পদক লাভ করেন।
‘বেঙ্গল উচ্চাঙ্গসংগীত উৎসব ২০১৩’-এর দ্বিতীয় দিনের অধিবেশন এই মহৎ মানুষকে স্মরণ করে উৎসর্গ করা হয়েছে।
