Subhankar Banerjee

Pandit Subhankar Banerjee was a renowned Tabla artist from Kolkata, India. He trained under the guidance of Manik Das of the Benaras Gharana, and Swapan Shiva of the Farukhabad Gharana. Over the years, Banerjee dedicated himself to exploring the disciplines of other gharanas. He was best known for his virtuosity and improvisational ability. Banerjee performed with many great musicians including Pandit Ravi Shankar, John McLaughlin, Ustad Rashid Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Dr. L Subramaniam, Dr. Balamurali Krishna, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit M S Gopalkrishnan, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Pandit V G Jog, Ustad Imrat Hussain Khan, amongst many others. He toured in both India and abroad, and was a member of the world music band Sacred Drums of India. Pandit Subhankar Banerjee passed away in August 2021.
